The coaches determine the length and frequency of practice. Most new swimmers and younger swimmers will practice only 1 hour, 3-4 times per week.

Beginners
| Suggested attendance: | Three to four times a week. |
| Requirements: | 25 yards of Freestyle and Backstroke. |
| Group Emphasis: | The blue group will work on continued development of Freestyle and Backstroke. Breaststroke and Butterfly will be introduced and or developed. The basics of practice etiquette and clock management skills will be introduced also. The reasons for setting goals will also be introduced. |
| Progression: | For any blue group swimmer to advance into the age group the swimmer must have developed good practice habits and clock management skills. Each swimmer must also be proficient in all four strokes and IM as determined by coaching staff. |
| Specific Skills Development: | Stroke Introduction Introduction to Brst and Fly Introduction to pace clock Lane etiquette Introduction to IM Wall work Starts Goal Setting |

Intermediate
| Suggested attendance: | Five times a week |
| Requirements: | Able to swim all four strokes and IM. Must be at least eight years old. |
| Group Emphasis: | The age group will continue stroke refinement and continued improvement on starts and turns. There will also be more emphasis on aerobic training that is IM based and the longer freestyle events will be encouraged. There will be more focus on goal development and proper habits so as to reach those goals. |
| Progression: | For any age group swimmer to advance to the senior group the swimmer must be at least 12 years old. The swimmer must also be able to complete the following test sets: 10 x 100 Freestyle on a 1:30 base 10 x 100 IM on a 1:50 base Timed 500 under 7:30 |
| Specific Skills Development: | Introduction to Underwater dolphin Continued pace clock understanding Relay Starts Some pace work. IM transition turn work Dryland introductions Backstroke starts Goal Setting and goal ownership |

Advanced
| Suggested attendance: | Five to seven times a week. |
| Requirements: | Must be at least 12 years old and make the pre-requisite test sets. |
| Group Emphasis: | The senior group is all those swimmers interested in developing their swimming abilities to the next level. Stroke refinement and a higher intensity of training are the main focus of the senior group. Goal discussions, career planning, as well as seasonal planning is also implemented. |
| Progression: | Making a YMCA National cut |
| Specific Skills Development: | Pace Work Breakouts/ Kicks off walls Commitment to the next level. AM Practices |
| Suggested attendance: | A swimmer must make at least seven to ten practices per week. |
| Requirements: | Making a YMCA National cut. |
| Group Emphasis: | The National Team is dedicated to the highest level of training. Through dedication in attendance and goal setting and implementation the National Team members will train towards realizing their full potential. Stroke refinement is still a critical component of this team as is overall Wahoo team leadership skills. This group is also dedicated to trying to achieve Junior and Senior National cuts. |
